These versatile, seasoned musicians, close colleagues and buddies have been meeting in various projects since the start of their musical careers. Currently, they are both members of the trio Infiltrators and lecturers of the Jazz Department at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LAMT).
Creative artists share passion for experimentation and spontaneous expression, rich technical arsenal, delicate musical taste and many other virtues.
Last year, the duo premiered their first album, Thousand Seconds Of Our Life, and now invite Birštonas Jazz audience to meet their Beyond album, released earlier this year in CD and LP formats. With their second album the artists are challenging themselves by breaking their creative stereotypes.
Dmitrij Golovanov, a talented improviser, composer, arranger, project leader and pedagogue, is a true chameleon of the keys. His flexibility has enabled him to participate in many different projects while also developing his idiosyncratic vocabulary and sound.
Well-schooled in jazz traditions, Dmitrij also enjoys stepping beyond – he revels in free jazz, experiments with electro-acoustic music.
Golovanov got jazz basics at the LAMT, later furthered his education in Mendelssohn-Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre in Germany. The pianist’s skills, his expressive and melodious phrasing have earned him recognition from colleagues, experts and audiences.
In 2007, he garnered Vilnius Jazz Young Power competition Grand Prix, the following year won the International Jazz Improvisation Competition in Vilnius, and in 2013 reached the finals of the European Jazz Competition in Rotterdam. The Lithuanian Musicians’ Union awarded the pianist with Golden Disc for his achievements in jazz.
Dmitrij has collaborated with Brothers Briliai (Russia), Annie Kierulff and Anders Andersson (Denmark); worked with Liudas Mockūnas’ NuClear, the Baltic jazz quartet Tree Stones, as well as international formations Beat Freisen Spelunkenorkester (Germany-Lithuania-Taiwan) and Swilit (Switzerland-Lithuania).
Dmitrij is a member of Infiltrators jazz trio, Veronika ChiChi Quartet and other collectives, enjoys creative experimenting with percussionist Arkady Gotesman poet Rolandas Rastauskas. As a leader and guest musician he is featured on more than ten CDs.
With various groups Golovanov appeared in European jazz festivals including London Jazz (Great Britain), Pori Jazz (Finland), Brugge Jazz (Belgium), MOL Jazz (Hungary), Leipzig Jazz and Jazz in Semper Opera (Germany), Jazz Jamboree (Poland) and Schleswig-Holstein festival (Germany), performed in Greece, Spain, Georgia, the Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia and Estonia.
Saxophonist, composer, group leader and pedagogue Jan Maksimowicz has stepped on jazz scene in 1996 and made his debut as a composer and leader of his quintet in 2002. He is one of the most talented disciples of the LAMT professor Petras Vyšniauskas.
Maksimowicz has presented author programmes with his trio, quartet, group Riot and other ensembles in all major jazz festivals in Lithuania.
In his projects the saxophonist also employs electronics, likes experimenting with musicians of younger generation, partakes in unorthodox formations and as a soloist collaborates with academic musicians. Since 2015, he has been a member of Leonid Shinkarenko’s quartet Jazz 4 N.
Maksimowicz has collaborated with many a Lithuanian jazz celebrity including Petras Vyšniauskas, Vytautas Labutis, Vladimir Chekasin, Dainius Pulauskas, Olegas Molokojedovas, Liudas Mockūnas, Arkady Gotesman, Vytis Nivinskas and Marijus Aleksa to name but a few.
He took part in a number of international projects including Baltic Asteroids and Anatoly Vapirov’s Mirror of Memory, teamed-up with Swiss trio Vein, Tim Daisy, Byron Wallen, Jaroslaw Bester, Grazyna Auguscik and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. The musician has toured in Moldova, Finland, Greece, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Poland.
